Travel Weather

In our excitement in finally being able to plan on when we might travel, we looked up the average temps. in Beijing and Guangzhou. Let's just say we will have a lot to pack.

Beijing's average temp. in late Oct. is 60-37. I wonder what the temp. will be on the Great Wall (brrrrrrrr).

Guangzhou's is 75-60. That sounds lovely!

We know we will travel to these two cities and probably a third, depending where Gracie's SWI is located. All the families we have spoken with who have already traveled there say to pack light, but that will be easier said than done. One thing that will keep me from overpacking is the weight limits for in-China flights. Each person is allowed one checked and one carry-on and they cannot weigh over 42lbs. If anyone has good packing tips, please let me know--I can use any advice :)

Remember The Poisonwood Bible? They still won't weigh YOU, so if you get into a pinch, wear something with big pockets! I know some regular travelers wear photography or fishing vests - lots of pockets but easy to remove at security checkpoints.

Dress in layers is a given, right?

I know that you'll probably buy souvenirs while you're there, so think about shipping them home instead of trying to pack them. My brother-in-law does this quite regularly and it works out GREAT. It's easier at customs, too.

What did y'all ever decide about a stroller? I'm still using the Baby Bjorn for Little Homie and he's over 20 pounds. Some kids don't like the carriers, though, so that might be a gamble for you. You could borrow one or find a used one at Kid to Kid and lessen the risk. Weren't you thinking about trying to buy a stroller in China if you decide that you need one for the trip home? I bet that would be easiest.

I'm sure that you'll get plenty of advice form the families who have already been there. I doubt that your carry-ons will be weighed, but there IS usually a limit on total linear inches (h+l+w). That's a big detail that you would want to know ahead of time. Also don't forget that the under-seat storage area is also your leg room, so if the overhead compartments are full, your knees will be up in your chest.

I guess that's enough blabbing for now. Have a great weekend!
